1968 Mustang GT “Super Snake” Paint Texture Refinement and Gyeon Infinite Ceramic Coating
THE PROJECT
This 1968 Mustang GT “Super Snake” came to Royal Automotive Care as part of a larger refinishing project in collaboration with Snowman Paint & Panel.
The vehicle's paintwork showed significant texture and required far more than a conventional machine polish. With the owner seeking the best possible finish, the goal was to carefully level the paintwork, improve clarity and reflections, and create a finish worthy of the car.
PAINT LEVELLING
Achieving the desired finish required extensive dry sanding, beginning with selected areas at approximately 1500 grit and progressively refining through multiple sanding stages up to 5000 grit.
This process physically levels excessive texture in the paint rather than simply polishing the surface. It is specialist work that requires careful assessment and control, as removing too much material or sanding unsuitable areas can permanently damage the finish.
The bonnet required separate refinishing due to issues with the fibreglass substrate and was handled by Snowman Paint & Panel before the final detailing stages.
RESTORING THE FINISH
Once the required levelling was complete, the paintwork went through multiple stages of machine correction and refinement.
Compounding removed the sanding marks and restored the initial clarity, followed by further polishing and refinement to maximise gloss and produce the deep, sharp reflections we were looking for.
This stage involved many hours of machine polishing across the vehicle, progressively taking the finish from deliberately sanded and completely hazed to a highly refined gloss.
GYEON CERAMIC PROTECTION
Once correction was complete, the Mustang was thoroughly washed again before the paintwork was degreased with GYEON Q²M Prep to remove polishing oils and residue ahead of coating application.
The paintwork was then protected with GYEON Infinite Base, while the wheels received GYEON Q² Rim ceramic protection.
With the correction work complete and the coating installed, the vehicle was allowed to begin its curing process inside our Southport studio before final inspection.
THE RESULT
This was considerably more involved than a typical paint correction.
The combination of controlled paint levelling, extensive machine correction and final refinement transformed the clarity of the finish while significantly reducing the unwanted texture that had been present in the paint.
Finished with GYEON ceramic protection to both the paintwork and wheels, the completed Mustang left with the depth, gloss and reflections the project deserved.
