1958 Ford Fairlane, Paint Correction

THE PROJECT

This 1958 Ford Fairlane came to Royal Automotive Care ahead of its appearance at Cooly Rocks On, with one clear objective — have it presenting at its absolute best for the show.

From a distance the Fairlane already had serious presence, but closer inspection revealed defects throughout the paintwork, including sanding marks remaining from previous paint repairs and areas requiring careful correction and refinement.

With a car of this age and character, the approach needed to be considered from the beginning. The goal wasn't to simply chase defects — it was to safely extract the best possible finish from the paintwork while respecting the vehicle underneath it.

CORRECTING THE PAINTWORK

Following a thorough preparation and assessment, the Fairlane underwent an extensive machine paint correction to address the defects visible throughout the finish.

Particular attention was given to areas showing sanding marks from previous repairs. These were carefully corrected and refined to improve clarity and create a more consistent finish across the vehicle.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO A CLASSIC

Correcting a classic like this requires a different level of awareness.

Edges, raised body lines, panel shapes and previously repaired areas all need to be treated individually. These areas can offer less margin for error than the centre of a panel, so polishing combinations, machine technique and the amount of correction attempted need to be adjusted throughout the vehicle.

The objective was maximum visual impact without unnecessarily compromising the paintwork to achieve it.

After multiple stages of correction and refinement, the Fairlane developed considerably greater depth, clarity and reflection while retaining the character that makes a car like this special.

FINAL PROTECTION

Once the correction work was complete, the paintwork was thoroughly inspected and prepared before a protective sealant was applied.

This provided the freshly corrected finish with additional protection while allowing the gloss and clarity achieved during the correction process to remain the focus.

With the final details completed, the Fairlane was ready for Cooly Rocks On.

FROM THE STUDIO TO COOLY ROCKS ON

The best part of this project was seeing the finished car outside the studio.

Royal Automotive Care was at Cooly Rocks On to give the Fairlane a final wipe-down and make sure it was presenting exactly as intended before going on display.

Under the show conditions, the work we'd put into the paint came alive. The depth, reflections and presence of the finished Fairlane made it impossible to overlook amongst the classics on display.

The car drew plenty of attention throughout the event and also gave us the opportunity to meet members of the 1958–62 Model Year Fairlane Club and become more involved with the classic-car community surrounding these vehicles.

THE RESULT

This wasn't about making a 1958 Fairlane look new.

It was about taking a car with more than six decades of history, carefully working with the paintwork in front of us, correcting what could safely be corrected and bringing out a finish with serious presence.

From visible sanding marks and paint defects in the studio to a deep, refined finish under the lights at Cooly Rocks On, the transformation showed just how much can be achieved through properly executed paint correction.

And when it came time to put the Fairlane on display, the paintwork did exactly what we wanted it to do — command attention.
